How we define success defines us. This one by Ralph Waldo Emerson suits me: "To laugh often and much, to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children ….to leave the world a better place….This is to have succeeded."

After interviewing two women for a recent article (http://wapo.st/iVvZtH ), I realized that you can make any job a pain or a possibility. It's up to you to build it up and make it more than just part-time, fill-in work.

Like a garden, our goals need regular care, sunshine and rain. Fertilize them and remove the weeds. How will you tend to your goals today?

About Me

I write about business, careers and workplace trends and issues for quality media organizations including the Washington Post. And I'm developing a hyphenated career: journalist - entrepreneur.

I co-own Mity Nice, an Italian ice cart company focused on giving teens jobs and supporting education and anti-hunger charities in and around Ann Arbor, Mi. (Follow us on Twitter: @MityNiceIce and Please add us on Facebook: http://bit.ly/MityNiceFB )

In between, I offer a handful of people career coaching and produce occasional career conversations, seminars or seminar-support groups. I prefer to work with creative self-starters who need a little direction or encouragement. Some of this comes from my pro bono Everyday Generosity efforts and some is paid work.

My career started in newspapers; I've worked for the Detroit Free Press, Newsday and the Press-Enterprise in California. I still pick up at least one ink-on-newsprint publication a day, plus magazines such as Budget Travel, Fast Company, Fortune, Bitch and some lesser known titles.
